Crucibulum laeve the only species recognised in this genus worldwide, is a bird’s nest fungus with
a short cylindrical nest felted on the outside and smooth and shining white internally. The white
eggs (peridioles) are attached by a fine elastic cord to the nest base.

Cyathus includes bird’s nest fungi resembling Crucibulum, in that the eggs are attached by a fine elastic cord to the nest base, but differing in the conical often flaring shape of the nest. Six species are reported from New Zealand.
